The numbers are matched with the year end number.

Yes, we do have a pretty good idea of what we are doing. As the Queen marking colour changes on a yearly basis it is good to remember which colour represents which year and the little mnemonic helps – incidentally it comes to you, via us, from The Cheshire Beekeepers Association.
